HANNA TIMONEN
Pictures of Mornings, Days and Nights
The works in the exhibition depict locations in Helsinki, built in the 1960s and 70s, which are due to be remodelled and rebuilt in the near future. The images are of mundane habitats; suburban landscapes that people pass through every day. These environments are interesting to me because of their ‘everyday’ character, and the way that they appear somehow self-evident. The passing of days itself could be understood as similarly self-evident or transparent, though in the course of it even large changes take shape.
Suburban landscapes interest me as spaces in which a romantic longing for nature meets aspirations for the modern. What is contained by these ideals of the modern varies in different epochs, something which has the effect of making them appear as layered and even paradoxical. That which once was the ‘New’ is now old – either outdated or an object of nostalgia.
The exhibition consists of photographs and moving image. The series Memories from Balcony Vol. I and II shows 12 views shot from a balcony between 2005 and 2008. The seasons, times of day and moods shift in them. The images culminate in the dismantling of the office building visible in all of them. Itäväylä is a moving image work that documents the sun setting and rising above the sea, as seen from Kulosaari motorway bridge. The landscape shown disappears and reappears in accordance with the amount of light available to expose the film. In all the works in the show I am exploring the slow changes in both a ‘natural’ landscape and built environments, and their potentially analogous relationship to the changes of light on film. In the digital age film as a photographic medium is in a state of flux similar to the places I take pictures of.
