IMPRESSIO – Path

Nuances of light,
Invisible colours,
Echoes in the timeless streams of memory.
Moments converge,
Creating new paths
For existence to choose.

I try to imitate my own memory; what that place and the time I spent there would look like in a picture. What my idea of that place is like. What is essential and stays in the mind. What my memory of the moment looks like.

My pictures a parts of a whole, yet they do not present a clear picture of their subject. Landscapes, lines, shapes and colours that lead the viewer’s thoughts yet provide no answers. All people see what they want to see. And find their own interpretation on the basis of the clues in the pictures. They reflect reality, yet they also partake in its construction.

In my work process, I am just a mechanical reproducer, the final piece is the result of chance. This gives me a more ‘real’ picture of the place than my memory alone would provide. Often I remember only individual events or places from an entire journey. This way I can create a holistic image, a kind of mental idea of the entire sequence of events.

My pictures are composed of individual photographs which I join together, allowing them to construct themselves. They do not freeze, they seem to live through movement. If it were possible to open up an image and cut it into pieces, you could see the entire image as a continuum. My pictures are like moving stills that embody a certain period of time. I have captured it and forced it to continue its movement in all eternity, or at least as long as my pictures exist.

My pictures are pictures of a landscape, a vaguely recognisable place. What makes them interesting is that which throbs in the background. The time which is uncaptured. Which remains between the moments of exposure. Something that is part of this time, yet remains unknown. It lingers, disturbing. When you look at it you think you see, but you do not.

The idea for the series comes from impressionism. I wanted to take photographs in the same way that the impressionists painted: to capture the moment and an impression of the subject through colour and light, and add movement to the picture. The Impressio series is divided into two parts. The first, España, was made when I was an exchange student in Madrid 2009-2010. The other part, Path, now on exhibit in Hippolyte, is the result of exploring the theme in Finland.
