Anne Yli-Ikkelä
Two-Wheeled Horse

Anne Yli-Ikkelä investigates the way we observe and experience the world. In her pictures she builds a world where everything and nothing is possible. The elements in the pictures are ordinary objects and things around us; a vacuum cleaner looks like a hamster, wires snake across the floor. The laws of physics are violated and ordinary objects acquire a new companion, ascribing new meanings to them.

Yli-Ikkelä creates multiple perspectives within a single image in an attempt to break the conventional idea of the gaze as looking out along a perspective. Yet the attempt can never be completely successful, because a photograph is by its very nature the creation of a one-eyed device. The camera establishes a vantage point, and in photographs time stands still, events are frozen in their place. The dislocation of the perspective in Yli-Ikkelä’s pictures nevertheless reminds us that observing reality is always an event. At one particular moment we see the chair from this angle, at another from another angle, or perhaps only parts of it. Different perspectives are invitations for bodily and temporal observation.

Play is an integral part of Yli-Ikkelä’s work. In her works the viewer can come across a gigantic dog, or ride a drying rack to the store. Playing means dreaming and exploration, curiosity and being open to the world, but it is also a way of commenting on reality, and also of turning it upside down.

Anne Yli-Ikkelä (b. 1980) lives and works in Helsinki. She is currently studying for an MA degree at the School of Art and Design at Aalto University. She has previously earned a degree from the Institute of Fine Arts at the Lahti Polytechnic. Two-wheeled Horse is Yli-Ikkelä’s first solo exhibition.
