The photographs in Ulla-Mari Lindström’s exhibition tell about absurd situations in everyday life. The camera for Lindström is a tool for picking out strange events, the pictures a way of taking a break from everyday life. The exhibition presents glimpses from the life of an adult and a child, navigating the zone between everyday reality and the world of play and imagination. Children’s books and television shows with their fantastic creatures also influence the actions of adults as well.
Ulla-Mari Lindström is particularly interested in the representation of movement within the arrested world of still photography. She uses long exposure times to accentuate the unreal fantasy mood in the pictures, and also to draw attention to the transitoriness of everyday moments. Photography for Ulla-Mari Lindström is a way of recording something unattainable, while also giving an opportunity for the unexpected that lies beyond reach of the naked eye.
Ulla-Mari Lindström (b. 1967) is an artist from Kuopio. She studied painting and photography in the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. She has studied dance before, and performativity is evident also in her photos. Lindström often poses in the pictures herself, positioning herself both as the viewer and the subject of the photo.
