Sanna Peurakoski
Wunderkammern: Leben vs. Stilleben

Sanna Peurakoski's exhibition in Hippolyte consists of photographs, still lifes with objects as well as hanging elements which pit two different sets of images against one another. The works on show are like Wunderkammers, visual curiosity cabinets. The viewer is pulled into the empty space opening between the pairs of images, to participate in the dialogue between the pictures. One set of images is produced by Peurakoski herself, the other comes from the estate of her father, Markku Peurakoski (1942-2000), who took photographs as a hobby in the 1960s.

The social and the human in the black-and-white photos from the 1960s engage in a dialogue with the material and the compositional in the artist's fresh colour prints, allowing Sanna Peurakoski to explore the relationship of the immaterial to the material, as well as the similarities between seemingly different images. In one set, the photographic focus is on the social world, while the other set takes on material motifs. Hung opposite one another, the photos seek to demonstrate how the mental sphere can be expressed by the material one. The whole builds up into a kind of apparatus of associations between different pictorial ideals and methods of expression. Peurakoski's work references the tradition of historical still life painting, exploiting its visual idiom and inherent pictorial devices, such as symbolic and iconological elements.

The nine pairs of images in the exhibition are Ilfochrome and baryta prints.

Sanna Peurakoski (b. 1975) is an independent photographer from Helsinki. She graduated as photographer from the Institute of Design at Lahti Polytechnic in 1999, and earned her Master's degree from School of Visual Culture at the University of Art and Design Helsinki in 2007.
