The Union of Artist Photographers serves as the expert body on questions relating to photographic art both for the private sector and for public bodies. The Union maintains the oldest and most prestigious photographic gallery in Finland, Hippolyte Photographic Gallery in the centre of Helsinki. In addition to monthly changing exhibitions, the gallery also has a sales collection where members of the Union may leave framed photographic work, portfolios, photographic books and postcards for sale. Members can also bring their portfolios to the gallery for presentation purposes.
The Union organises an annual photographic sales exhibition, regular gallery exhibitions as well as thematic shows in Finland and abroad.
The Union offers the following services to its members:
- A membership bulletin about eight times a year. The bulletin contains topical information about the Union, current activities, photographic art in general, grants and awards, studios, etc.
- A periodical, Musta Taide or Taide, for members who have paid their membership fees.
- A membership card that entitles the holder to rebates, such as a lower admission price to museums
- An application form service (for grants and studios)
- General professional counselling and services
- Advisory services, especially for the exportation of exhibitions and publicising exhibitions held abroad
- A rebate on the rent of Hippolyte Photographic Gallery
- An annual sales exhibition where members can leave their works
The Union of Artist Photographers is a member organisation of the Artists' Association of Finland, the following services of which are available to Union members:
- IAA international artist identity card
- four issues of the Taiteilija periodical a year
- legal expenses insurance in professional disputes
- studio apartments for Finnish artists and for foreign visitors.
