The triennale in 2002: OFF SKENE! - 4th Finnish Photographic Art Triennale in the Amos Anderson Art Museum 14 June-11 August 2002.

The Union of Artist Photographers organised the 4th Photographic Art Triennale in 2002 in the Amos Anderson Art Museum. The title of the triennale was OFF SKENE 14.6. - 11.8.2002.

The exhibition was a departure from previous triennales in several ways. This time it was not the established and prestigious photographic art that was highlighted. Although the triennale was still about photography and art, it was not necessarily about photographic art. The exhibition was different from its precursors also in that only a few of the invited artists were members of the Union of Artist Photographers. The Board of Directors of the Union invited Jari Björklöv and Harri Kalha to curate the triennale. FM Jari Björklöv is curator at the Helsinki City Art Museum, Dr Harri Kalha is a researcher, freelance curator and writer.

The working title of the exhibition was Väli(nee)tön valokuva, photography that is both immediate and non-instrumental. Its thematic content rested upon the tension between two conceptual points, empathy and instrumentality. The immediacy implied by the thematic element of empathy calls for a certain lack of instrumentality, an abandonment of the ballast of the aesthetic tradition and technology of photography - or commenting thereof. Although the prominence of photography in contemporary art is undeniable, there has been little discussion about the evolving nature of photography as an increasingly "democratic" medium of art. In response to this, the triennale took a turn towards critical introspection, to consider the culture of photography without regard for the internal boundaries of various disciplines of art.

The following artists were invited to participate: Veikko Björk, Maria Duncker, Minna Haukka, Minna Heikinaho, Gun Holmström, the "Hyäryllistä" group (Jouko Korkeasaari, Sari Koski-Vähälä, Heli Kurunsaari, Harri Lukkari), Marko Karpow, Petri Kaverma and team, Tanja Koponen, Arto Korhonen, Anne Koskinen, Tiina Kuhanen, Jouni Kujansuu, Anneli Nygren, Tuula Närhinen, Heikki Rapo, Aurora Reinhard, Jaakko Rustanius, Riiko Sakkinen, Jari Silomäki, Minna Suoniemi, Pekka Syrjälä and Mikael Vallgren. A catalogue in Finnish, Swedish and English was published in conjunction with the exhibition.
