Photographic artist Philippe Bazin (Paris, FR) is artist-in-residency at Photographic Gallery Hippolyte/Union of Artist Photographers in Finland 15 August – 15 September 2009. Philippe Bazin’s artist residency focuses on photographic research, including portraits and other forms, in the environment of the Helsinki University of Technology and the technology-oriented corporate world situated in Otaniemi, Espoo.
Philippe Bazin (b.1954) is based in Paris, France. He has worked with extensive series depicting faces of his fellow creatures. Through the photographs, people who are often given no attention to and have no collective visibility are visible anew. For Bazin it is not so much about making portraits, in the usual meaning of the phrase, as to claim the presence in the world of beings who are unknown to him, but without whom he could not live. Philippe Bazin’s work includes: 1985-1993 three large series of faces in medical institutions, 1993-1995 children in secondary school, 1993-2000 Anatomies dealt with restoration sites of cultural places, 1999 he photographed 48 Yugoslavian militant women with diverse ethnic backgrounds. He has also done a work with all the faces of the French presidents. Philippe Bazin has been artist-in-residence in Porto (Portugal), 2001 and Scotland (UK), 2002. Bazin has more recently also worked with video, and published several books.
