Antoanetta Marinov
Guess What
29.5.–26.6.2009

Antoanetta Marinov’s works are rooted in the experience of things close by so that they often rely on references from daily events. Both the sculptural interventions and the two-dimensional images explore and enhance the perception of the seen and the experienced. Founded on the tradition of the square image, Marinov’s works bargain its characteristics of isolation and exclusivity giving way to the light sense of humour which often accompany her works.

From January to June 2008, Antoanetta Marinov was working at the Tapiola Guest Studio in Espoo, Finland. The residency was sponsored by the international exchange and studio program IAAB from Basel (CH). The sixth month of the residency in Tapiola was the starting point for developing a question which is still open. The works now shown at the Hippolyte Studio were realised during the stay.

It Has Snowed is a series of photographs taken during the artist’s walks. They are documents of ephemeral interventions made in the way. Objects were displaced from the snowy ground so that they could be portrayed together with their two-dimensional print.

The video works shown deal with the question of picture finding. The recording medium itself is thematized when for example in special effects 1 (the last of the snow balls) the medium-specific device of showing an action backwards becomes the essential source of picture construction.

In bike around a spot (Berlin 2009) actions are repeated on the same background, which itself becomes a constant, hammering visual reference. Spot is the search of the perfect, essential and exclusive composition.
