EXOTIC CITY
The word ‘exotic’ is generally used primarily to denote difference. The quality of being exotic is usually associated with food, plants, southern countries, in fact almost anything that is not typical to our northern culture. I have often heard the quality associated with Russia: St Petersburg or Russian culture. This idea gave the theme to my exhibition, Exotic City, that involves the city of St Petersburg. The show consists mostly of works from the past twenty years or so. In addition to photographs, the exhibition in Hippolyte Studio also involves sound.
Often when I travel to St Petersburg, the home town of my childhood, I photograph things that draw my attention. That which is new in some way, expressive or untraditional. Russia has gone through a historical period of collapse and progress that manifests as positive change.
St Petersburg lies quite close, but also, in a way, quite far. It awakens interest as it becomes more westernised, even though Soviet heritage still remains visible there. The values of the city’s inhabitants are also changing, although they remain in part faithful their old views.
