NOOMI LJUNGDELL
A Version
Version is a work about possibilities. It is a series of visual and verbal attempts to replicate their immediate visible environment.
Every art exhibition involves a huge number of choices, framings, eliminations, decisions and compromises all of which affect the thing that is presented to the audience. The final exhibition or work of art is just one of the countless possibilities, each one of which could have become.
Version investigates whether the other, unrealised alternatives might coexist with the final result. Would it be possible to show, instead of the final version alone, also the parallel alternatives? If it were, what is the actual exhibition – is it anything at all?
Is a multiplicity of an exhibition or a simultaneity of several exhibitions possible? Version can be seen as a reiterating variation, a rumour. It is the evolving message in a game of broken telephone, but without the last player who utters aloud the final message. It is a reflection in a mirror and the reflection of that reflection, a hall of mirrors.
Or as the cosmologist Esko Valtaoja writes in his essay ‘Welcome to the Multiverse!’ (Tiede2000 3/1998): “Everything that can exist, exists in some of the countless universes; everything that can happen, happens somewhere. In some of the universes
you have written this essay and I am reading it.”
Noomi Ljungdell (b. 1979) is an artist photographer from Helsinki. The starting point of Ljungdell's works is often conceptual: she examines the experiences of presence, place and perception through photographs, textual works and installations.
