Petri Nuutinen

In July, Hippolyte Studio presents new, intriguing work by Petri Nuutinen.

Nuutinen investigates the environment by observing spaces and man-made structures and the traces contained in them. Doors and windows are openings that enable us to see and move into another space or another world. Stairs are pathways we use to rise up or step down from one level to another – physically as well as symbolically.

Nuutinen’s camera is guided by the movement of the gaze. This gives rise to the material from which he compiles the final works that look into other spaces. He has abandoned the traditional photographic rectangle, emphasising instead the act of looking by retaining the free forms arising from the combination of photos. The hand-painted support provides a living texture to the free-form pigment prints, underlining the uniqueness of the works.

Petri Nuutinen (b. 1955) is an artist photographer who lives and works in Tampere. He has exhibited his work in both solo and group exhibitions since 1977 in Finland as well as abroad. Works by Nuutinen will be on show this summer also at the Retretti Art Centre in Punkaharju, and at the Sense of Wood 2011 exhibition at the Hyvinkää Art Museum.

Nuutinen is interested in the way we perceive sites and spaces, how that perception is transferred into images, and also in the physical aspect of the resultant works. In addition to his creative work, he has also worked as a press photographer, picture editor, graphic designer and teacher.
