KAPA
Searching for a Landscape

As a photographer, I follow my own path, often a bypath. I am not an investigator, I rather seek and observe, I listen – and go astray. Instead of research, I thought I would bring to Hippolyte Studio a process. It began with the purchase of a new phone, which made me curious about using the device to create (photographic) art.

The landscape project I had already begun changed radically: I gave more space for experience, emotion and colour as well as nuances, while distancing the conventional way of depicting a landscape photographically. These ‘non-photographs’ emerged to parallel ‘real photographs’ and even to surpass them.

Kapa
(Martti Kapanen, b.1949) is a photographic artist from Jyväskylä. After graduating from the photography department at the Lahti Institute of Applied Art in 1975, he worked three years as a freelancer in Helsinki, and subsequently for 12 years at the Alvar Aalto Museum, mainly photographing architecture and art. From 1990 he has worked as a free artist.

Kapa has had several solo exhibitions, and he has participated in group exhibitions in Finland and internationally. He was awarded the State Art Prize in 1984, the Art Prize of the Arts Council of Central Finland in 2001, and he was a Fotofinlandia Finalist in 1992 and 2001. The pictures in Hippolyte Studio are appetizers for a more extensive sitting.

The exhibition is supported by the National Council for Photographic Art.
