A Documentary Show: Hippolyte's History

 

Photographic Gallery Hippolyte Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary in December 2008

The gallery will celebrate its anniversary year from 4 December 2008 to 29 November 2009. Simultaneously with the main exhibition, a documentary show presenting the history of Hippolyte will be mounted in Hippolyte Studio, featuring archive material going back to the very beginning of the gallery. The historical material is deposited in the Hippolyte Collection in the Finnish Museum of Photography.

The documentary photographs present highlights from the history of the gallery, from the move to the new premises to the many even historically important exhibitions held there. In addition to documentary photos, the show also includes photos, exhibition material and posters from exhibitions by prominent photographers such as Diane Arbus, Robert Frank, Eadweard Muybridge, Caj Bremer, Tuija Lindström and Matti Saanio.

A documentary video by Veli Granö shows Ismo Kajander and Tuomo-Juhani Vuorenmaa, both co-founders of the gallery, reminiscing about the history of Hippolyte while browsing through archive material.

The exhibition is compiled by Veli Granö, Raakel Kuukka, Jari Silomäki and Kari Soinio, all members of the Union of Artist Photographers, and it is produced in cooperation with The Finnish Museum of Photography. The archiving of material is supported by the National Council for Photographic Art.
