Olla minä - Being Me
The series analyzes the interaction between people's appearance and contemporary ideals of beauty. 'Being Me' was initiated by public discussion about the ideals of beauty that the media create - especially for young people. My main interest is in the interaction between the two - how individuals define their own appearance and way of being in relation to the constructed ideals.
I don't want to judge or criticize different individual choices, but rather stress the diversity of people and their identities. I'm interested in finding connections or ruptures between individual choices and ideals.
Elämä raiteilla - Balanced Life
'Balanced Life' is a series of portraits of friends who have survived serious accidents. The work tells the stories of people who have been injured in accidents and have recovered from them. I have photographed them in their homes in everyday situations and atmospheres.The photographs are not concerned only with individual human destinies, but reveal, as I believe, that the strength of these individuals also exists on a more universal level.
Under the Ground - A Blaze in the Northern sky
"Under the Ground - A Blaze in the Northern Sky" is comprised of video films and portraits of 'underground' people from the North.
The main theme in the series is the different kind of identification mechanisms that people - especially in the metal scene - use to identify themselves as members of a 'universal tribe'. It is a well-known fact that in metal circles the ancient northern myths, traditional stories and natural phenomena are some of the main sources of inspiration not only for the music but also for the dress code of tribe members. I have many portraits in which people wear masks. A mask or 'corpse paint' signifies the gateway to the other world. Some of them consider themselves to be modern shamans - the mask creates a new personality, one that is connected to nature and the earth spirits.
