Trans-Actions keskittyy kuvataiteilija Kristiina Koskentolan (FI/NL) teoksiin, jotka hän on tehnyt vuosina 2007-2008 Pekingissä ja matkallaan Gobin autiomaan läpi Mongoliassa. Julkaisuun on kirjoittanut esseitä Ruben de la Nuez (Cuba/NL) ja Marjolein Schaap (NL). Julkaisu sisältää taiteilijan ja Carol Lun (China) keskustelun ja Mika Hannulan (FI/DE) epilogin. Julkaisu heijastaa paitsi Kiinan nyky-yhteiskuntaa ja –taidetta, myös abjektin käsitettä (inhon ja vastenmielisyyden tunteen kokemista), rumuuden kulttuurillista kuvausta, väärinkäsityksiä ja muistia.

Trans-Actions fokuserar på bildkonstnären Kristiina Koskentolas (FI/NL) verk som hon gjort under åren 2007–2008 i Peking och under hennes resa genom Gobiöknen i Mongoliet. Publikationen innehåller esseer av Ruben de la Nuez (Kuba/NL) och Marjolein Schaap (NL), ett samtal med konstnären och Carol Lu (Kina), samt en epilog av Mika Hannula (FI/DE). Förutom att boken reflekterar på det samtida samhället och konsten i Kina, diskuteras även konceptet abjekt (upplevelsen av avsky och motvilja), kulturella representationer av fulhet, missförstånd och minnet.

P A N E L   P A R T I C I P A N T S

Mika Hannula (*1967, Turku, Finland) has a PhD in Political Science and lives in Berlin and Turku. He works as a lecturer, writer, curator and critic. Currently he is a professor in Artistic Research at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts, University of Gothenburg. From 2000 to 2004 he was the director of the Helsinki Academy of Fine Arts, and since 2002 he is the chairman of KUNO, Nordic network of Art Academies.
He has curated exhibitions in Helsinki, Shanghai, Venice, Trondheim, Berlin, Copenhagen and Istanbul among other places, and from 1999 to 2001 he was the reviews editor of NU: the Nordic Art Review.
Hannula is the author of numerous articles on contemporary art and of several books, including Why Do I Like Rock Music? – Theoretical Discourse on Contemporary Visual Art and Culture (in Finnish, University of Trondheim, 2000), It’ s All or Nothing – Critical Theory, Contemporary Art and Visual Culture (in Finnish, Kuvataideakatemia, 2003). Upcoming 2009: Politics, Identity and Public Space – Critical Reflections In and Through the Practices of Contemporary Art.

John Heymans (*1954, the Hague, the Netherlands) is a philosopher of art, science and technology. He studied applied mathematics as well as philosophy of science, technology and society at Twente University in Enschede, the Netherlands.
Since the summer of 2003 he has been working as a mentor at the DAI, especially for theoretical matters. Apart from this Heymans was the first Scholar on Stage at the Department of Modern Art History of Leiden University, Netherlands. In close collaboration with the Veenfabriek, the artistic ensemble directed by Paul Koek, he researched the philosophy of early electronic music as well as special made reconstructions of the remarkable instruments from this period such as the futuristic ‘intonarumori’ and other siren based instruments. Currently he is finalising the book on this research project: Staging a Siren Orchestra, to be published in late 2009. The first Scholar on Stage project was rounded off with a so called Symposium on Sound, an international scientific meeting with contributions by Laurie Anderson, David Behrman, Jonathan Sterne, David Toop and many others.
Heymans is also active as a literary essayist. He has published Among others monographs on the painter Armando and the documentary filmmaker Cherry Duyns, two internationally acclaimed Dutch artists. He is preparing a monograph on the Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt. Now and then he writes poems - about three a year.

Kristiina Koskentola (*1967, Mäntsälä, Finland) is a Finnish artist, based in Amsterdam. She graduated for her Masters in the Dutch Art Institute (2007). She works with a range of media: installation, interventions in public space, video-performance and photography.
From 2007 on she has been working in China and Mongolia and is regularly returning to China to continue her work and research. She also works as a guest lecturer and workshop leader in Shantou University Cheung Kong School of Art & Design and The Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing.
She has exhibited in the Zendai Moma in Shanghai, Huang Yan Contemporary Art Space in Beijing, Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden and Gallery W139 in Amsterdam among other places. In July-August 2009 was her first solo exhibition in Finland, in Photographic Gallery Hippolyte. December 2009 she will participate the 4th Baku Biennial of Contemporary Art “Aluminum”, in Azerbaijan.
